Vinyasa Yoga:
The Art of Sequence in Iyengar Yoga
w/ Lois Steinberg
April 7 - 10, 2008
12:30 - 4:30pm | Studio I
members: $395 for all 4 days or $105 per day
nonmembers: $475 for all 4 days or $135 per day

Advanced Studies can obtain nine hours of credit by attending all sessions and writing a paper.

BKS Iyengar received the art of external sequencing, vinyasa krama, from his Guru, Krishnamacharya. Over the course of 65 years of teaching, he deepened his understanding of vinyasa to include steps that lead one to the ultimate or final state of a practice. He teaches, "...Vinyasa is not merely a fast mobile movement in asana. It is a procedure of building oneself."

In this four-day workshop, Lois will present the art of sequencing in groups of poses and practices: standing, forward extension, inversions, back extension, lateral extension, and balances. She will incorporate sutra study and pranayama as an integral part of the vinyasa training. Participants will leave with tools to explore the firmness and subtlety of a wide variety of poses, penetrating the deeper levels
of the consciousness.

Prerequisites: Present or past participation in an Iyengar yoga teacher training/ advanced studies program, currently teaching yoga, or permission of the instructor. Participants must be willing to perform and explore all the categories of poses, including inversions.

LOIS STEINBERG, from Urbana, Illinois, holds an advanced level certification in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar. As a scholar, author, nutritionist and Iyengar yoga teacher with 30 years' experience, she brings a unique variety and wealth of personal
understanding to her presentation. Lois' current writing project is Geeta Iyengar's Guide to a Woman's Yoga Practice (vol. 2 forthcoming). In her teaching, she emphasizes and exemplifies the whole-body transformation of the practitioner through the joy of regular immersion in practice.

Hip Openers
w/ Nora Burnett
April 26, 2008
1:30 - 4:30pm | Studio I
$55 members | $70 nonmembers

Tightness in the hips can be a major factor in back
pain and also restrain our experience of yoga postures. Ideally, our hips would move evenly in all possible directions, allowing for greater freedom in other parts of the body as well.  Various ranges of hip movement will be explored through the asanas, with a focus on how these ranges relate to one another.. While many poses will be supported and supine, we will also experience how working in different relationships to gravity —standing, inverting, sitting— affect the range, stability and ease in the hips. Open to all levels.

Back Bend Basics
w/ Bobby Clennell

7:00 - 9:00pm | Studio II

When practiced mindfully, back bends dispel negativity, alleviate anxiety and lift the spirit.   But for some, backbends can be a frustrating experience.  In this workshop, we will lay the groundwork to prepare the body for the strong work to come. Then we will establish the basic principles of alignment and learn the connections that need to be made within the body and with our props in order to achieve a strong, safe and dynamic practice.  Open to levels 2 and above.

Essential Poses for Women's Health
w/ Bobby Clennell
June 14-15, 2008
1:00 - 5:30pm | Studio I
$195 members | $235 nonmembers

Advanced Studies can obtain nine hours of credit by attending all sessions and writing a paper.

Saturday
: Cycles of a woman's life - from menarche to menopause.

Part
1: The underlying currents of hormonal activity that women
experience throughout the month affects the way they feel and the way
they practice. This workshop is designed to help the student develop
and maintain a cyclically responsive practice. We will also work with
such problems as PMS, menstrual cramps, excessively heavy periods and
absence of menstruation.

Part 2
: Just as physical and psychological disturbances occur when
menstruation begins, you have to face them again at menopause. This is
a critical period of adjustment. Learn how to navigate through this
phase with a practice that calms the nervous system and brings
emotional balance. Issues covered include hot flashes, depression and
fatigue. We will also explore the challenges and rewards that present
themselves once the menopausal transition has passed.

Sunday
: Yoga for motherhood - Asana and pranayama for prenatal and
postpartum.

Part 1: It is essential for a pregnant woman to maintain her physical
and mental well being both for herself and for the health of the unborn
child. In this workshop we will modify and refine the asanas in order
to accommodate the pregnant woman's changing body. We will practice in
such a way as to alleviate tiredness and nervous tension, give maximum
space for the baby to move and grow freely and prepare the expectant
mother for delivery.

Part 2
: Yoga after delivery is completely different work. Both Ayurveda
and yogic wisdom agree that the postnatal phase, which continues for
about a year is a challenging time for a new mother. Particularly for
the first three months, a woman should not be in a hurry to get back to
a strong yoga practice. This workshop presents a yoga regimen that both
allows the post-natal student to recover from the birth of her child,
and progresses her practice in a timely and appropriate manner. We will
also learn which asanas support lactation, and which asanas return the
abdominal and pelvic muscles to their former shape.

BOBBY CLENNELL: Bobby is a direct student of B.K.S. Iyengar and was certified to teach by him in 1978. Her book, The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle, was published by Rodmell Press in May 2007. She is a core faculty member of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York where she teaches six classes weekly.

Visranta Karaka Asanas: Restorative Asanas
w/
Kathy Alef
June 21 , 2008
1:30 - 4:30pm | Studio I
$
55 members | $70 nonmembers

The supported asanas taught in this workshop will give rest to the organic body as well as the mind.  The supports will allow the student to stay in the pose for longer durations with ease.

Guidance will be given to passively extend and expand in the pose.  This will create room within for the organic body to spread and the breath to freely move within the space.  The breath will be directed to various locations in the body, with each location having a different effect.

Open to Iyengar students who have been practicing for at least three years.
