BKS Iyengar received the art of external sequencing, vinyasa krama, from his Guru, Krishnamacharya. Over the course of 65 years of teaching, he deepened his understanding of vinyasa to include steps that lead one to the ultimate or final state of a practice. In this four-day workshop, Lois will present the art of sequencing in groups of poses and practices: standing, forward extension, inversions, back extension, lateral extension, and balances. She will incorporate sutra study and pranayama as an integral part of the vinyasa training. Participants will leave with tools to explore the firmness and subtlety of a wide variety of poses, penetrating the deeper levels Prerequisites: Present or past participation in an Iyengar yoga teacher training/ advanced studies program, currently teaching yoga, or permission of the instructor. Preparation for Arm Balances Back Bend Basics w/ Bobby Clennell June 14-15, 2008 1:00 - 5:30pm | Studio I $195 members | $235 nonmembers Advanced Studies can obtain nine hours of credit by attending all sessions and writing a paper. Saturday: Cycles of a woman's life - from menarche to menopause. Part 1: The underlying currents of hormonal activity that women experience throughout the month affects the way they feel and the way they practice. This workshop is designed to help the student develop and maintain a cyclically responsive practice. We will also work with such problems as PMS, menstrual cramps, excessively heavy periods and absence of menstruation. Part 2: Just as physical and psychological disturbances occur when menstruation begins, you have to face them again at menopause. This is a critical period of adjustment. Learn how to navigate through this phase with a practice that calms the nervous system and brings emotional balance. Issues covered include hot flashes, depression and fatigue. We will also explore the challenges and rewards that present themselves once the menopausal transition has passed. Sunday: Yoga for motherhood - Asana and pranayama for prenatal and postpartum. Part 1: It is essential for a pregnant woman to maintain her physical and mental well being both for herself and for the health of the unborn child. In this workshop we will modify and refine the asanas in order to accommodate the pregnant woman's changing body. We will practice in such a way as to alleviate tiredness and nervous tension, give maximum space for the baby to move and grow freely and prepare the expectant mother for delivery. Part 2: Yoga after delivery is completely different work. Both Ayurveda and yogic wisdom agree that the postnatal phase, which continues for about a year is a challenging time for a new mother. Particularly for the first three months, a woman should not be in a hurry to get back to a strong yoga practice. This workshop presents a yoga regimen that both allows the post-natal student to recover from the birth of her child, and progresses her practice in a timely and appropriate manner. We will also learn which asanas support lactation, and which asanas return the abdominal and pelvic muscles to their former shape. BOBBY CLENNELL: Bobby is a direct student of B.K.S.
