In Sanskrit language a sutra has these qualities:
alpaksharama, asandigdham, saravata, vishwatomukham, akshobhyama, anavadyama ca sutram sutraviduhu.
A sutra must be concise, without exuberant adjectives, without vagueness, and expressed in logical grammar without contradiction; it must have harmony of syntax without redundancy; it can have more than one meaning but there must be neither self contradiction nor contradiction with other sutras, and it must deal with the subject matter with minimum number of sutras. Above all it must be recognised as sutra by those who are known authorities.
This definition will be examined along with the meaning of some important sutras. Ramanand will help the students see how to apply this understanding to the asana practice as well as to yogic life.
